About our special guest
Thomas Carell, born in 1966 in Herford, Germany, began his academic career in chemistry at the Universities of Münster and Heidelberg, earning his doctorate in 1993 at the Max Planck Institute for Medical Research. After postdoctoral training at MIT (1993–1995), he moved to ETH Zurich, where he completed his habilitation in 1999. In 2000, he became full professor of Organic Chemistry at Philipps University in Marburg, and in 2004, he joined Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, leading a research group focused on the chemistry of epigenetic programming in DNA and RNA. Carell is a member of the German National Academy Leopoldina and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Arts and Sciences, a recipient of the Cross of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany, and has been a member of the supervisory board of BASF SE since 2019.
